Community Action Groups – Get Involved in Reducing Waste
January 27, 2017

Community Action Groups Devon (CAG Devon) is an exciting new project working to support community groups in Mid Devon to reduce household waste. Do you like meeting new people? Would you like to volunteer in your community and help people feel more connected? We are currently looking for local people to get involved in a couple of projects – Food Champions and Compost Doctors.

Most families with children waste a staggering £720 worth of food per year. On the evening of 21st Feb or daytime 22nd Feb you can join us in Tiverton to train to be a Food Champion and help support your friends, family and community to waste less food. A trainer from Love Food Hate Waste will be giving top tips on how to reduce food bills and food waste, as well as providing resource packs with lots of activities and games that can be used in your community. Trained Food Champions may then like to attend community events or give talks. CAG Devon would also like to support Food Champions who are keen cooks. Together we hope to run practical community cooking events using leftovers and food salvaged from supermarkets to provide people with cookery skills and cheap, tasty communal meals.

On 18th March we will be running Compost Doctor Training – join us as we learn with Nicky Scott from Devon Composting Network the secrets of the compost heap. The training will enable volunteers to not only compost at home but feel confident to talk about composting at events and with friends and family.

There are many other opportunities for people to get involved in the CAG Devon project and help make a difference in their community. We are supporting activities including: clothes swaps, Give or Takes (a jumble sale with no money exchanged), Repair Cafes (get things fixed for free while having a cuppa), community cooking and shared food events and composting.

We are working with existing community groups, and will be helping to set up new ones. As well as environmental benefits, we hope that the project will save people money and bring people together in their community. The project is funded by Devon County Council.
