Residents reminded to be vigilant with energy scheme cold callers
March 19, 2019

Mid Devon District Council has today issued a reminder to residents regarding the Energy Company Obligation scheme known as ECO Flex.

The Government run scheme is designed to help households cut their energy bills by reducing carbon emissions through the installation of energy saving measures. The Council supports the scheme by determining which households in Mid Devon meet the criteria and are eligible for support.

Residents, however, should be aware that Mid Devon District Council does not endorse or approve the work of any specific providers of energy installation equipment.

The Council has been made aware that letters are circulating in the area and householders are being cold called from companies claiming to be working in conjunction with the Council – or giving that impression. This is not correct. The Council does not guarantee work carried out and does not recommend any particular company to our residents.

Kevin Swift, Public Health Officer, said:

“We are keen to support our residents to reduce their energy bills and carbon footprint and we work hard to ensure those eligible for energy saving grants can access the funding available. However, residents should not be under the impression that a business which approaches them for work under the Eco Flex scheme is in any way working with the Council or endorsed by them. This is not to say the businesses in question would not carry out suitable work – but residents should not feel encouraged into buying their services by a perceived association with the Council.”

Details about the scheme can be found at middevon.gov.uk/ECOFlex.

If you receive such a letter and wish to speak to a member of council staff please call Kevin Swift via 01884 255 255 or email health@midddevon.gov.uk.
